What Really Matters: Searching for Wisdom in America by Tony Schwartz. Paperback (April 1996) Bantam Books. List Price: $12.95, Amazon.com Price: $10.36 You Save: $2.59 (20%)!

"What Really Matters"? Everyone is answering that question, whether they know it or not, every moment of the day. Some people intentionally inquire deeply into the heart of the matter. Of those some, a smaller number have played the Game of Life well, stopped in their success tracks, took an intelligent journey, and have documented it with heart, streetsmarts, humility and grace.

Let Tony Schwartz, former Newsweek & New York times star reporter, and ghost writer for Donald Trump's "The Art of the Deal", tell you of his journey and the revelations along the way in "What Really Matters: Searching for Wisdom in America." A sagacious truth-telling tale of trumping the ego and the art of getting undone in the right way. Yes.

The Heart Aroused: Poetry and the Preservation of the Soul in Corporate America by David Whyte. Hardcover - 307 pages (May 1994) Currency/Doubleday. List Price: $22.50, Amazon.com Price: $15.75 You Save: $6.75 (30%)!

The words: soul, spirit, & heart are big business, now. They are also showing up in Big Business. I guess that's a good thing, although the inevitable is already happening. The words themselves are becoming a hot commodity, reduced to a glib cultural artifact. Nonetheless - there are people who have played the role of pioneer in this commercial renaissance, and the originality of their work merits an imbibe, like a fine Welsh ale. We thought David Whyte, Welsh naturalist turned poet in America, was already very well known for being worth the drink. I'm hearing many potential OtherWisers say "who?". We recommend his work, (beautifully designed) for those who have not heard of him or have any doubts about the quiet thunder of the hearty "new business model."

The Future Ain't What It Used to Be: The 40 Cultural Trends Transforming Your Job, Your Life, Your World by Mary Meehan (Editor), Larry Samuel, Vickie Abrahamson. Hardcover - 320 pages (January 1998) Riverhead Books. List Price: $27.50, Amazon.com Price: $19.25 You Save: $8.25 (30%)!

High altitude, right-on-target trek through the contemporary cultural and commercial landscape. They're tree-marking marketing opportunities for all you eyeball-popping, hop-on-the-train-before-it-leaves types. Intelligently trendy book and consultancy on trends...Doesn't get much smarter or sassier. Marketing veterans gone whole hog post-hip. . . As we read them, we at OtherWise wondered "Did they steal our style, or we theirs?"... Neither. It's in the air. A trend, perhaps? Besides, we were on sabbatical from life "unplugging" (an identifiable Iconoculture trend) for 4 years while they've been ramping/romping...Now that we are up and sitting, is OtherWise "zentrepreneuring" or what? Who cares.

Time Out Guides Paperback. Penguin USA. Various dates and authors. Reasonably priced!

We're a footloose group here, and we especially enjoy open spaces with European roots, trees included. Still, most of us will find ourselves travelling in cities. A great resource for a lot that is OtherWise in character is the English-based Time Out Guide series. Their guide was right on and indispensable for Budapest. We hear the same from others regarding other world destinations they cover.

Gurdjieff & Ouspensky have been some of the original sources of our Grand Undoing here at OtherWise. The work of these men is not California spiritual cuisine lite, though the crazy wisdom of Gurdjieff can snap a few laugh-synapses from time to time...

It may be argued that the transmission of these masters of evolutionary possibility is flavored by the dark and turbulent times of early to mid-20th Century Russia. Yet most people called to the path of "waking up" would agree that the main messages are undiluted, timeless and radically (as in root) true.

In Search of the Miraculous by P. D. Ouspensky. Paperback (reprint August 1974) Harcourt Brace. List Price: $13.00, Amazon.com Price: $10.40 You Save: $2.60 (20%)!

A glimpse into the experience and psychological mathematics of what lies beyond the "mechanical" aspects of life. Also, a compelling saga, in its own right, of Ouspensky's relentless search for a teacher and teaching that could point to direct experience of higher possibilities. Through many countries, political upheavals, disorienting encounters, rigorous experiments - finding in his own backyard, Gurdjieff - one of the most enigmatic and influential Crazy Wisdom masters of all time.

Psychology of Man's Possible Evolution by P. D. Ouspensky. Paperback - 128 pages. (December 1973) Random House. List Price: $8.00, Amazon.com Price: $6.40 You Save: $1.60 (20%)!

A spare, terse distillation of the no-nonsense call to waking up in the manner of the 4th Way, which takes place not in the monastery, but in the ordinary conditions of life. Basically, Gurdjieff's transmission of esoteric understanding through Ouspensky's language.

Meetings With Remarkable Men by G. I. Gurdjieff. Paperback. (October 1991) E P Dutton. List Price: $13.95, Amazon.com Price: $11.16 You Save: $2.79 (20%)!

Gurdjieff "lite"... A true and/or perhaps a "fused" allegorical story of Gurdjieff's own quest for the truth beyond truth - through rigorous trials, dangerous cul-de-sacs and in the company of people of extraordinary qualities. A good read, exotic to most of our experience, yet, also, a compelling first step into meeting the life and message of this most remarkable man.
