- Emily Dickinson IN THIS ISSUE
We change the following BARKWORTHY reminder periodically, just to let you know we're not asleep at the meal. No mass-produced fetches allowed here! That's why we wag your tail to . . . SAVE THIS ISSUES!!! Print them in 3-D.
When you're ready for that travel adventure, business revelation,
gift of music, techno-quandry, or evening in front of the squak
machine - you'll be glad your Golden Retriever is on your lap.
WISE ENTERPRISE: Emily's Enigma: "Success in circuit lies"... Emily Dickinson, the prescient 19th Century poetess of Amherst, Mass, self-sentenced herself to the confines of her own home for a lifetime...What can her terse, enigmatic refrain tell us about wise enterprise in these bombastically extroverted times? If we told you straight out, then we'd be short-circuiting the message,- delivering information at the expense of meaning, wouldn't we? If we putter about, then we violate the secular lawfulness of electronic mail, the success of which is predicated upon short attention spans... No offense. (Believe us, pups - hand-held fine books and the art of the spoken story are making their comeback...It is in the nature of things that extremes sire their opposite. That, for another time.) The message is that the best route to a destination is not always the direct one, as any wilderness trekker can tell you. Likewise, a hug is a far better explanation than any explanation, as almost any woman will teach a man. And in wise enterprise, what then, Emily???... Well, let's render praise to logical strategies, fierce intention, and careful preparation; they have their season. But, for a " success unexpected in common hours" consider the round-about. For example: Practicum 1. For that next meeting or negotiation, be ready with exotic munchies for an unexpected breakout. Or get up and exchange places with someone. Might be the best point anyone makes in the session. Humans, like their wisepups, need surprises to chew on...They think smarter and happier. Otherwise, they start acting like pseudo-adults, two-wheelers stuck in the mud of their laborious intentions. Moving energy is higher leverage than moving logic. 2. When our own work is stuck, it might be time to plunge into the ridiculous or the unknown. Do something drastically different, like rolling in the mud, or inviting yourself to someone else's party... Or simply STOP EVERYTHING. For many of us it's a high discipline to forsake discipline. 3. (Your suggestions, please???) ...Einstein, a master of the upside-down, suggested that light doesn't travel in straight lines... Enlightenment, either, it seems.
It's a curvy universe out there... Belleweather moments are likely to
come to those who work and conduct their business by skating around the
turns. Sound true...???
We've followed this Boulder-based company for a few years. They offer fine recordings of contemporary Wise Ones, like Pema Chodron, Gangaji, Joseph Campbell, Julia Cameron, et. al. Excellent gifts for people who would enjoy an uplift or whom you'd like to finally straighten out...They also have recordings for helping people who have a need to straighten out other people. Hear some true voices as a temporary upgrade from a momentary lapse of your own...Get their catalog, which now includes music... 1.800. 333-9185...(Classy tunes, while you're on hold)... (website: under major construction)
Caveat: Get the goods, yet keep, if you can, listening to your own
voice, especially as the Din of CollectiveJabberTalk surges riotously
to overtake our besieged attention spans. Even Noble Chatter is
sprawling beyond the suburbs.
Silence is the big marketing opportunity of the Millenium.
Cash in by saying nothing and selling it.
TRAVEL: And, if you are looking on a moment's notice to shake loose of e-mail or to the music in Brazil, para example, consider the vastly cheaper, impromptu-friendly air fares to various destinations with or phone (bless your endearing carpe diem digits): 1- 800- 822-0888 (Denver)
Takes a little bureaucratic sign-up diddling, but worth it for the
options.
We are always looking for special destinations, and unusual,
economical ways of getting there... Be a Real Mensch-Pup, and send YOUR
SUGGESTIONS.

On a more sobering note...WiseMember Shoshana Strange, has informed us that her mate, Skip,is suffering difficult neurological side effects from "Larium" - an anti-malarial drug taken before trips to lands like Africa... If anyone has similar experience, or practical advice on the subject, contact Shoshana. beingthere@iname.com
In the meantime, take heed.
CULTURE: Fina Estampa, Caetano Veloso: An impeccable Latin blend. We recommend this CD (Phillips/Polygram, 1994) for its impeccable and original renditions of some of the finest Latin romantic, mystic and dance ballads from the 1930's to the present. Caetano Veloso is sort of a Brazilian Paul Simon: versatile, widely influential, trend-free, lyric, - with the added inescapable Brazilian sensuality. A voice like down feathers. The music is classically elegant, yet completely natural and innocent in its blend of rhythm, harmony and lyric... Poco schmaltzy at a few turns, but acceptably so, given a few romantic themes. WISDOM: CRAZY OR OTHERWISE What about those missing piano keys? If even all you can do is play chop sticks on the piano, you've probably noticed that there are no black keys between some places. If you are slightly more trained, you know the missing steps are between the 3rd and 4th and 7th and 8th steps of the major scale? Twice in the octave. How come? Some anomaly? An artistic conspiracy of western cultural classicists? What if we asked Grand Uncle Gurdjieff (GR#5), crazy wisdom magician? He might tell us, in whatever shocking way the moment required, that the movement of the musical scale reflects a higher natural law underscoring all manifestations. There are unavoidable places where the scale bends (compresses), and something new needs to enter in order to complete the octave, or take it to a new level. Kind of like light not travelling in straight lines and "success in circuit lies". Friendships, projects, companies, civilizations, - all with beginning points, increases, blocks, endings, renewals. Let your innerpup sniff out the truth of these things, over time...
Meanwhile, regards from Emily, Einstein, Gurdjieff
and your tail-wagging retrievers here at OtherWise.
