company of fools."* - Thomas Fuller IN THIS ISSUE
LISTEN, HOT DOGS & GOLDEN RETRIEVER Bone Fetchers: We are becoming one of your primary filters, right? A lot of ore gets crushed to get the gold...so, HOLD on to or PRINT these issues.
When you're ready for that travel adventure, business
move, gift of music, techno-quandry, or evening in front of the squak
machine - you'll be glad your Golden Retriever is on your lap.
CULTURE: Reads: Though Utne Reader "the best of the alternative press" has a readership of a million, many are unaware of it or pass by it. It comes out bi-monthly, so there's time to savor its eclectic sweep of OtherWisey terrain... For 20 bucks, its a deal. Lots of good insights, useful tips, great writing. Kind of like a cross between the New Age Journal (which Eric Utne founded and left in the early 80's) and the New Yorker. CALL: 800. 736-UTNE, to order. Check out the May-June, 98 issue: "Jammin' with the Giants" a hit list of 150 all-time must see, must hear, must reads from Lao Tsu to Thelonius Monk. Old issues are cheap ($5... Like, "The 10 Most Enlightened Towns in America - and that doesn't include Santa Fe" 6/97, or "Fire Your Shrink-Hire a Philosopher" Feb.97). Needless to say, they combine substance with OtherWise irreverance. Check out their Cafe Utne Website:
voted the best chat/real conversation site on the web. These are the folks
who re-vitalized the art of the salon - simple conversation in local cafes
and living rooms. (Get the 1991 back issue 44..."The Art of
the Salon.")

WISE ENTERPRISE: We are recommending the work of the Heartland Institute and the Conscious Business Alliance, which stands for good work, good values in business. Craig and Patricia Neal lead workshops like the "Inner Life of Business" around the country and do coaching/consulting for the likes of Aveda, Whole Foods, and the Heart of Business Conference. They bring together visionaries like Paul Hawken (Smith & Hawken tools, "the Inner Life of Commerce"), David Whyte ("The Heart Aroused :Poetry & Preservation of Soul in Corporate America) and other notables and fledglings. Go to: http://home.earthlink.net/~hiinc TIP: Marketing something? It's an art, not a science... Most people know it's necessary, but are frequently surprised and often disappointed with the results. "Homespun" can work as well or better than classy. It defies laws.
One suggestion: Try several smaller approaches in tests,
rather than banking on the big splash, which might leave you low and
dry. I have a friend, now a reformed Golden Retriever suscriber, who
once put an $16,000 ad in Penthouse (circulation 16 million) for a
hologram device priced at $24. He got a whopping 50 inquiries,
with one asking about installment payments. Not good.
A cardboard sign at a craft fair would have been more
profitable. Maybe, even graffiti on the Sausalito-Mill Valley Bridge.
TECHNOLOGY: So what's going on with search engines? Is your sites getting hits from the public coming from the top search engines? Beats everyone right now. So many fast changes that even savvy Internet service provider, and WiseMember, Mogenns Gilmour of WebCoach (our man) is recommending a dedicated company to handle your search engine maintenance. Top Pick: Review the packages to see what's best for your web presence. Second:
A little cheaper.
TRAVEL: Looking for a bus tour to Stonehenge? How about a group visit to the Louvre on Friday, the Uffizi on Sunday and a bus-round-up to Pisa on Monday? If so, LEAVE OTHERWISE IMMEDIATELY. You're in the wrong queue. Try the Alternative Travel Group in England. A warm-spirited, classy outfit in England that leads walking tours through the best of Europe on the back routes, and even provides itineraries for the solo-types who want to footloose it through farm, field and village charm, while having your bags chucked to the next inn. I've tried finding these routes on my own. It takes time. Their experience is worth it.
Alternative Travel Group. Oxford, England. WISDOM: Crazy or Otherwise Some of you know that George Gurdjieff & Peter Ouspensky have been salty Muses for our Grand Undoing here at OtherWise. Though they finished their body-work (and we don't mean massage therapy at Esalen) here on the EarthShip of Fools - their messages still pummell and exalt. Try, for intros:
Meetings with Remarkable Men by Gurdjieff Beezelbub's Tales by Gurdjieff may be too much of a tall order to start with. New Age spirit-talk is nice jelly. This stuff is bread, with olives - when you expect raisins. Get them all at the site:

OTHERWISE BRIEFS:
Keep visiting the OtherWise site, your MarketPlace and your sanctuary for Vital Business, Artful Living & Other NobleStuff.
We are constantly developing resources for you and having fun
for ourselves.
Inspired to comment or suggest? Please place your genius here (remember, mercifully brief, - we need our nap time too): By the way, don't take it too personally if we don't respond to you personally...
We ARE interested, and you may find your comments and
recommendations immortalized in future issues, or even at the
OtherWise web site.
