"Language is a tailor's shop where nothing fits." - Rumi
- What do you want to hear first: money (wise enterprise) or film
(culture)?
Well, the customer isn't always right - and it's our newsletter. So...
you get first a little gold from the silver screen...
Here's a single Golden Retriever fetch, for the price of one.
It won't be noted in the year 3000 as the celluloid that altered a whole
civilization or bankrolled a new studio. But it will leave you with a
sense that you've done something worthwhile with your life for a couple
hours. Some succulent shots of Europe and tantalizing dishes of music.
You might also think and feel, but never to a manipulated excess. In
other words, not Hollywood.
In English with fine European accents - the best of both worlds for us
farmers here in the colonies. Called the "The Lisbon Story" - by Wim
Wenders, papa to Wings of Desire (and its sequel), among other notables.
Takes place in . . . guess the location and you're allowed to remain a
WiseFool. In the film, you follow the lyric meanderings of a cinema
sound man, called mysteriously to location by an elusive, self-obsessed
director to finish some unmentioned film. You follow the creative spirit
as it rejuvenates itself. You play with some unusual kids.
Some classically rendered, indigenous music - played on site,- so
lyrically beautiful, naturally performed that I put the film on pause to
look in the Yellow Pages under "Portuguese (Whoops!-gave it away, you
all can stay) Travel Agents." Thought better of it, though, since we
have
our own OtherWise resources for travel, and returned only to pause and
re-play the scenes of that angelady singer & band ("Madradeus").
- Wise Enterprise.... thanks to OtherWise member Leslie Speidel (The Marketing Coach), -an introduction to Iconoculture, the group, the web site and their book,
"The Future Ain't What It Used To Be"...
High altitude, right-on-target trek through the contemporary cultural
and commercial landscape. They're tree-marking marketing opportunities
for all you eyeball-popping, hop-on-the-train-before-it-leaves types.
Intelligently trendy book and consultancy on trends...Doesn't get much
smarter or sassier. Marketing veterans gone whole hog post-hip. . . As
we read them, we at OtherWise wondered "did they steal our style, or we
theirs"... Neither. It's in the air. A trend, perhaps? Besides, we were
on sabbatical from life "unplugging" (an identifiable Iconoculture
trend)
for 4 years while they've been ramping/romping...Now that we are up and
sitting, is OtherWise "zentrepreneuring" or what? Who cares.
We started musing . . .though, what's the essential difference between
an Iconocouterist and a flegling OtherWiseFool? Let's say: spicey
inspiration on an rich information platter vs. succulent information on
an rich inspiration platter. Confused? Good. Let's move on.

- Music. OtherWise member Howard Stone, of the infectiously warm-hearted
http://www.2young2retire.com , soon-to-be-fame said to us: "Ry Cooder's
Buena Vista Social Club."Thanks, Howard," I said, and went my way...
After all, I play a decent slide guitar myself, have gone hoity-toity
classical/Brazilian guitar route and don't need more of the old days.
Wrong.
Non es una altra take of the best slide guitar riffs in the world we've
come to expect from RyCooder... This is party and listening music at
it's
best. Upbeat, Cuban period (40's-50's) revival , rendered with classical
finesse and improvisatory panache. We're talking... open white shirts,
palms, and good-natured romance here. Get revived.
