BARK! Welcome, new WisePups, including all you Utne Reader tailwaggers. We are somewhere between 800 and 1 million by now.

VINTAGE pups: We know you get too much to chew on these days; That's why we're sniffing out for you the best from the barrage, to keep your fine noses out of the dumpster.

WISE ENTERPRISE:

OK. You're overwhelmed. Now what?

PUNCH: You'll never, never, never get it all done. And, if you get it perfect, its glory will erode. Surrender. Your king is checkmated. Now, go blaze with gusto and enjoy the show. You are not what you do.

WIND-UP: For a living, I coach people: creating the right job, finding the path, staying in balance, achieving high goals, turbocharging businesses, keeping the mystery alive.

One of my most intractable clients is my longest-standing one. Me.

After many years, and lifetimes, I suspect, of trying to get it right and all done, I find myself surrendering my position on the hamster wheel. Here are some messages I send myself frequently for living well the imperfect life in business, on the road and at home.

  1. Breathe deeply. Always, everywhere, (except if you're underwater).

Obvious, but who does it? I bet you don't, even if you are a Yoga instructor. No offense. Breathing deeply embodies the message that you are willing to take in life... You'll like it and others find it attractive, even in business. They become subliminally seduced to act from their better parts. Also, it's free. Try it.

  2. If you are centered in the future or the past, you don't exist.

Carpe diem. Do the one thing now that will dignify your life. Break from the computer. Wear a brighter color. Toss out 2 mails more for each one you receive.

  3. Your body-mind apparatus has a built-in expiration date.

The universe is not impressed with your personal story line. It just wants you to be awake and it will help you in the most surprising ways to succeed in that enterprise.

  4. You are perfectly here for something. "Better to perform your own duty imperfectly than the duty of another perfectly well."

There are 5 billion opinions out there at any given moment. Some of them worthier than others, - but OUT there. Better an honest mistake from within, than a safe imitation of what's outside. Hey Jude.

  5. All the people that you think are out there thinking about you, aren't. Guess who they're ruminating about? Most of the people whom you think need you, don't. You are disarmingly free.

  6. If you need periodic snacks, keep an almond + dried cranberry (fruit-juice sweetened) mixture in the car or pack or briefcase.

  7. 6 is enough.

ONLINE SUSTAINABILITY STORE & CO-OP AMERICA'S NATIONAL GREEN PAGES

Although it's an OtherWise habit to keep our noses on the Bigger Picture, we're all for making this earth parade a little merrier and cooperative. We'd like to thank Joel Metzger of the Online Noetic Network for the following recommendation. We'll feature his work in the next issue.

(excerpt) "Sustainability Store is a new Internet retail shopping site, featuring products from the most environmentally and socially responsible businesses known today. Every product in Sustainability Store comes from a Provider company that is screened and sponsored by Co-op America, a 15 year old national nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a socially just and environmentally sustainable society."

CULTURE:

Film: "Shakespeare in Love"

Usually, we recommend the hard-to find, or the worthy, but long-forgotten. Yet OtherWiseFools are reminding us that we are underplaying the times. We trust your judgement, mates, and would prefer if you did the work, anyway. Here's a pick from you..

"Please don't miss seeing 'Shakespeare in Love'. It's a brilliantly conceived fantasy about the kinds of circumstances that might have inspired young Will to write "Romeo and Juliet" and other masterpieces. It is humorous, witty, romantic and erotic (some of the most wonderful love scenes I have ever seen in a movie- Joseph Fiennes and Gwyneth Paltrow are ravishing. Yaoooooo).

The visual impressions are stunning and all the acting superb. Judi Dench as Queen Elizabeth I is a thing to behold, and Geoffrey Rush ("Shine") outshines everyone else with his comic timing. As always, it's a pleasure to receive your newsletter" - Iris Bieri

Thank you and well done, Iris. You've just earned a panacheful no-paying job.

Film: "Life is Beautiful"

Just because something is immensely popular, doesn't mean it isn't good and that you've experienced it.

Fiercely comic, touchingly beautiful and (2nd half) shockingly deep, it is a must. Winner Cannes Film Festival...We've said enough.

FOOD:

It's Yams for all occasions, Sweet Potatoes

Like we said last time, Otherwise fetches are often versatile edibles that work for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks or dessert. They are simple, yet not unimaginative and are easy to prepare. Here is one so simple, it's embarassing.

Embarassment, for the record, is a superb tool for transforming your life. Remember B. Franklin, - "A man begins to live only when he's lost his reputation."

First: Yams are the purply, sweeter ones. Sweet potatoes are yellower, feistier.

  1. 3 average size, organic of course...Wash. Throw in boiling water with skins.

  2. After 15-20 minutes, stick in fork. If soft...Remove. Place under cool water. Remove skins. They glide off like they're ready for a job change.

  3. Mash. Come on: everyone has Mars in their birthchart somewhere.

  4. Salt to taste, with ghee (Indian clarified butter) - good for no milk, no oil types; ghee tastes like buttered popcorn without the popcorn. Add cinnamon, fresh ground orange peel (or bottled).

  5. Sprinkle with slivered almonds.

Feeds 6 at a meal or one person with a huge problem they're avoiding.

Looks great with a green at dinner... a snack at night...or ready to go for breakfast. Will hold up in fridge, though Ayurvedically speaking, all foods lose their vitality if stored...You'll live.

TRAVEL

Transitions Abroad

Rick Steves of "Europe Through the Back Door" (GR#1) recommends this journal...for working, living, travelling outside the US. If you love travel and the idea of residing for awhile elsewhere gets your tail wagging, go for it...We'd say more, but why don't you instead? Send in a story william@wisefools.com, if you've used their advice and how it helped you...

WISDOM: CRAZY OR OTHERWISE

Self- Quiz: "The only difference between me and a madman is...

Multiple choice

  1. I occasionally think through things carefully.

  2. I'm aware of my riotously conflicting feelings.

  3. I'm not mad.

  4. I know boundaries have their limits.

  5. None of the above, except the first 4.

The correct answer is #6. All those of you who got it, please forward this e-pistle to someone who already has too much. It might push them over the brink, where real creativity begins.

OTHERWISE BRIEFS: Shorts-shorts very short this time.

  1. We're sometimes a little behind in getting our fetches/links up at the site from the previous retrievers. http://www.wisefools.com/grlinks/grfetches.html Try again.

Good news (excuse) is that Peter Cohen, OtherWiseWebSpinner, is busy doing good work for several of you...He's still available to do your site: corporate or homepsun, at an OtherWise discount for members.

    peter@otherwisedesign.com

  2. HUNGRY FOR YOUR INPUT

...Amazon did not carry the cookbook series we recommended in our last retriever #12..."The Book of Curries & Indian Foods" by Linda Fraser from HP Books series out of England, published by Berkeley Publishing Group in America. The series is primo, so LET US KNOW if you've got a source.

  3. Check out the revised coaching site and self-test at http://www.wisefools.com/coaching. Might clarify the state of your union.

FORWARD THESE FETCHES TO A FRIEND. There's plenty of room in the den. Our pack grows largely by referral.

Keep visiting the OtherWise site, your MarketPlace and your sanctuary for Vital Business, Artful Living & Other NobleStuff.

We are always rambling in the bushes, sniffing out Lickworthy Stuff for you and your kind.
